Any good antivirus softwares?

I need a free antivirus software (NOT free trial) for my computer. I have tried AVG but it blocks up my screen every time it needs to update.

Are there any antivirus softwares which are free and update silently (run minimized/work in background)?

Is there a way to force AVG to update silently?
